Application Procedures

As there are a limited number of spaces available in the Certificate in TESOL program, admission is granted on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting the minimum admission requirements will not guarantee entry to the Certificate program.

  • Application Deadline for May entry is March 31
  • Application Deadline for September entry is June 30

Section A: Individuals who have a Degree

Applicants who are not current York students will fill out 2 applications: one to York University Admissions and one to the TESOL Program.

The Certificate is open to students who have been granted a Bachelor's degree with a minimum grade point average of 4.0 (C) or equivalent. Individuals holding a Bachelor's degree can be exempted from a maximum of 12 of the required 30 credits provided they have taken equivalent courses during their undergraduate/graduate education. Exemptions will not be given for the following courses: AP/LING 3600 3.0, AP/TESL 3200 6.0, and AP/TESL 3300 6.0.

Admission to York University

Please apply using the Online Undergraduate Application.

Admission to the TESOL Program

An online supplementary application (which includes a personal statement) is also required.

Section B: Current York Undergraduate Students

Current York undergraduate students need to fill out only the TESOL application form linked below. To qualify for admission to the Certificate in TESOL, students must have successfully completed at least 24 credits with a minimum grade point average of 4.0 (C). In order to be awarded the certificate, students must successfully complete a Bachelor's degree (90 credits) or an Honor's Bachelor Degree (120 credits). Eighteen (18) of the 30 credits required for the Certificate will be counted towards the Bachelor's (or Honors Bachelor's) degree.

Please note that AP/TESL 3200 and AP/TESL 3300 do not count towards your BA.

Supplementary Application

Applicants for admission to the TESOL Certificate programme are required to submit an online supplementary application, which consists of a short statement explaining your interest in the TESOL Certificate programme, how you see it fitting into your career plans, and any past experience you may have that relates to your interest in the certificate.
